The science of lavender

The science of lavender

Tonic’s signature heat therapy collection is filled using dried lavender flowers to add a subtle soothing fragrance. It’s Science Week so let’s talk about why we choose lavender!

Used since Roman times to aid insomnia and other sleep issues, lavender continues to be a favoured botanical for those looking for ways to relax and unwind.

The drying process increases the potency of the fragrance of lavender buds with gentle heating refreshing the fragrance further. In our thirty years of using lavender in our heat pillows we’ve crafted the perfect ratio of dried lavender flowers and barley to ensure the fragrance isn’t overpowering but still lasts.

One of the many benefits of heat therapy is relief from period cramps and muscle aches and the lavender fragrance is also thought to have a positive effect on these symptoms as well. The combination of the two is the perfect natural remedy.

The soothing fragrance of lavender is ideal to enhance meditation practice. Our eye pillows are filled with flaxseed, a smaller grain that is perfect for adding gentle weight to the temples. The eye pillow can also enhance savasana practice at the end of a yoga session.

Did you know we irradiate all of our dried lavender, barley and flaxseed before filling our heat and eye pillows? The irradiation process sterilises the natural materials so you can confidently use your Tonic items all year round.
